PUTRAJAYA - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) shows its appreciation for the contribution made by its industry and community partners in ensuring the success of the industry and community networking in ‘UPM Industry and Community Appreciation’ (ICAN 2018).
The seventh annual event awards UPM’s High Impact Industry and Community Network Awards to industry and community partners, UPM academic and non-academic staff and students who have contributed outstandingly in the industrial or community networking programmes and the community in 2017.
UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato' Dr. Aini Ideris said ICAN 2018, organised by JIM (Industry and Community Relations Office, UPM) together with UCTC (University Community Transformation Centre, UPM) and CiRNeT (Centre for Industry Relations and Network, UPM) reflected the high-impact collaboration between UPM and its industrial partners, NGOs, government bodies as well as the community.
“This programme is one of the initiatives of the 10 leaps in the Malaysian Education Development Plan (Higher Education) which are pivotal in sustaining the dynamic relationships between universities, government, industries and communities.”
“UPM’s Industry and Community Relations (JIM) has excelled by successfully achieving all its 2017 targets. A total of 5,863 industry and community networking were successfully implemented by PTJs (Centres of Responsibility) in UPM, of which 70 were high impact industrial projects, and 66 were high impact community projects of 4 and 5 stars," she said at the ceremony held at the Pulse Grande Hotel, Putrajaya.
Prof. Aini said the implementation of the industrial and community network projects in UPM is in line with the needs of the country in which nearly 65% ​​of UPM’s community projects support the intervention efforts to curb social problems in Malaysia.
At the event, a Year 1 Bachelor of Agricultural Science student from the Faculty of Agriculture, UPM, Syazwan Nur Hakim Muhamad Arif, received a scholarship from Genting Plantations Berhad for the year 2018 from its President and COO, Tan Wee Kok. The scholarship was established to empower the agricultural sector in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations), Prof. Dato' Dr.-Ing. Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo said that 340 research and development grants for the activities of the Industry and Community Relations Office (JIM) secured involved Research Project contract grants from the industry, Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP) grant, UCTC National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) grant and KTGS grant.
"These grants have provided opportunities for university community to perform knowledge and technology transfer to the community to enhance their well-being. Industrial research grant contracts enable the academic staff of the university to conduct research related to industrial issues.”
"Of the 5,863 programmes/projects carried out by JIM, 388 were conducted at the international level, and 69 programmes/projects were recognised as a 4 and 5-star (high impact) Adopted Programmes," he said.
According to Prof. Renu, most of the international projects focused on human capital development programmes while the Adopted Projects involved other programmes such as Innovation and Design, Human Capital Development, Senior Citizens, Halal Development, Entrepreneur Development, Community and Development Services, Serdang Green Township, Orang Asli Development, Incubation, International Networking, University Promotions and Community Expertise and Well-being.
JINM programmes were funded by income generated from the industry/community either in cash or in-kind, worth RM72.4 million in 2017. - UPM
